Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to travel to Washington next Monday (18 August) for a meeting with former US President Donald Trump. He shared this information on social media platform X on Saturday (16 August).
Following a telephone conversation with Trump, Zelensky wrote on X that he would meet President Trump in Washington, D.C. on Monday to discuss issues related to the cessation of killings and the war. He expressed his gratitude to Trump for the invitation.
Describing the conversation as “lengthy and realistic”, Zelensky said that Trump briefed him on his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which took place on Friday in Alaska, including the key topics that were discussed.
Zelensky stated that Trump reaffirmed his readiness to make every effort to bring peace to Ukraine and noted that American influence could play a significant role in improving the situation.
He also mentioned that they support Trump’s proposal for a trilateral meeting between Ukraine, the United States, and Russia. According to him, this format would be suitable for discussing critical issues at the leadership level.
Additionally, highlighting the importance of Europe’s involvement in ensuring Ukraine’s security, Zelensky said that they had also discussed the positive signals from the United States at every step. He noted that they are coordinating their position with all partners.
Earlier on Friday, Trump and Putin held more than three hours of closed-door talks in Alaska. After the meeting, Putin stated that they had reached a “mutual understanding”. Trump also acknowledged that there had been “some progress”, although no agreement had yet been made regarding the end of the war in Ukraine.
