The curtains have fallen on an era of profound melody as the eminent Bangladeshi composer and music director, Shah Newaz, breathed his last. The veteran artist passed away on Saturday, 7 February 2026, at 3:33 am at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal, Canada. He was 76. The news of his demise was confirmed to the media by his son, Swadesh Newaz.
Shah Newaz had been battling severe health complications for several months. According to family sources, he was admitted to hospital on 7 December last year. Given the gravity of his condition, he spent a significant duration in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and was placed on life support multiple times. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, the maestro’s journey eventually reached its silent conclusion.
Shah Newaz belonged to that rare breed of artists who preferred the sanctity of the recording studio over the glare of the limelight. He was a pivotal figure in the evolution of modern Bengali music, crafting a repertoire defined by restraint, depth, and an atmospheric, introspective quality. His compositions were often the emotional heartbeat of Bangladesh Television (BTV) dramas, translating poignant scripts into evergreen auditory experiences.
| Song Title | Original Vocalist(s) | Cultural Significance |
|---|---|---|
| "Asha Chilo Mone Mone" | Rafiqul Alam | Lyrics by Zahir Raihan; remains a quintessential folk-fusion classic. |
| "Rail Line Bohe Somantoral" | Dilrubba Khan / Moloy Kumar Ganguly | Featured in the 1983 drama Ekdin Jakhon; an anthem of longing. |
| "Bondhu Re Tor Mon Pailam Na" | Shahnaz Rahmatullah | A masterclass in soul-stirring melody. |
| "Sonar Mukhi Sui Diye" | Shahnaz Rahmatullah | A deeply spiritual and emotive composition. |
His versatility was such that he collaborated with nearly every legendary voice in the Bangladeshi music industry, including Sabina Yasmin, Runa Laila, Andrew Kishore, and Syed Abdul Hadi. However, his influence was not confined to national borders. International icons such as Bhupen Hazarika and Haimanti Shukla also lent their voices to his tunes, underscoring the universal appeal of his melodic sensibilities.
Shah Newaz leaves behind his wife, a daughter, two sons, and a vast community of admirers. His family has indicated that he will be laid to rest in Montreal. Though the recluse composer has departed, his legacy will endure through the "parallel rail lines" of memory and melody that he so masterfully laid for the Bengali-speaking world.
