The United States Embassy in Dhaka has issued a stringent formal advisory to Bangladeshi citizens, reiterating that individuals travelling to the US on Visitor Visas are strictly prohibited from engaging in any form of paid employment. In a statement released on Saturday, 7 February 2026, the diplomatic mission clarified that while the B1/B2 visa category allows for specific, limited professional activities, it is not a substitute for an authorised work permit.
The B1 (Business) and B2 (Tourism/Medical) visas are designed primarily for short-term stays. According to the embassy, the distinction between "business activities" and "labour" is often misunderstood by travellers. Under the current federal regulations, a visitor may participate in high-level commercial transactions or academic pursuits, but the moment an individual receives compensation from a US-based entity or takes up a job role, they are in breach of their immigration status.
The embassy highlighted that while a visitor can negotiate contracts, settle estates, or attend professional conferences, they cannot engage in "hands-on" work for a local employer. This includes freelance work, seasonal labour, or any position that provides a salary, stipend, or even non-monetary perks in exchange for services rendered within American borders.
| Category | Permissible Activities (B1/B2) | Prohibited Activities |
|---|---|---|
| Business | Negotiating contracts and consulting with associates. | Taking up a full-time or part-time job. |
| Events | Attending professional or scientific conventions. | Receiving payment for performing at a concert. |
| Education | Participating in short-term unpaid training. | Enrolling in a full degree course for credit. |
| Financial | Purchasing property or settling a legal estate. | Operating a business or managing day-to-day labour. |
| Medical/Tourism | Undergoing surgery or visiting national parks. | Seeking employment to fund the duration of stay. |
The Embassy’s message serves as a preventative warning against the long-term repercussions of visa misuse. It noted that ensuring the correct use of a visa is the sole responsibility of the holder.
Violating the terms of a B1/B2 visa—specifically by working illegally—carries severe penalties. Such infractions typically result in the immediate cancellation of the visa, potential deportation, and a significant likelihood of being barred from re-entering the United States for several years. In more serious cases of fraud, travellers may face permanent ineligibility for any future American visa categories.
The advisory concludes by encouraging applicants to verify their specific travel needs and ensure they apply for the correct visa subclass if their primary intent is to work or reside in the country for an extended period.
