The countdown to the World Cup has officially begun, and the footballing world is buzzing with predictions, strategies, and debates. Among the many discussions, one of the most captivating questions concerns Lionel Messi and his potential impact on Argentina’s chances. In a recent interview, German football legend and Bayern Munich star Thomas Müller offered his considered views on the matter.

According to Müller, Messi’s presence could influence Argentina in two opposing ways. On one hand, he could provide a major boost to the team’s attacking prowess. On the other, the immense reliance on a single superstar could prove a double-edged sword, potentially destabilising the squad under high-pressure situations. Müller, who was part of Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning side in Brazil, also reflected on his own national team’s prospects in the upcoming tournament.

Speaking to Magenta TV, Müller commented:

“From my perspective, if Messi is there, it will certainly be an intriguing factor. It could completely alter the team’s balance. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse.”

Müller had the opportunity to witness Messi up close during the recent MLS Cup final, where his Vancouver Whitecaps side fell 3-1 to Inter Miami. He praised Messi’s influence during the match, noting his constant activity and ability to initiate attacks at crucial moments. Yet, he cautioned against assuming the same impact would automatically translate to the highest level of international football:

“Every time he received the ball in the MLS final, he was brilliant and created numerous attacking opportunities. But whether the same performance would carry over instantly at the World Cup? I have my doubts.”

Turning to Germany, Müller expressed his focus on progression rather than glory. After winning the World Cup in 2014, Germany suffered the disappointment of exiting at the group stage in the subsequent two tournaments, a stark reminder that even the strongest sides can falter. Regarding the 2026 World Cup, Müller offered a pragmatic assessment:

OpponentStatus/ContextExpected Challenge
CuraçaoLesser-known football nationUnfamiliar opponents may present tactical puzzles
Ivory CoastEstablished African teamLikely to provide a direct and physical challenge
EcuadorSouth American runners-up in qualifiersTechnically strong, potentially tricky matches

“At first glance, the names of our opponents suggest that progressing to the knockout stage is mandatory,” Müller explained. “After previous disappointments, our primary concern is advancing beyond the group stage rather than immediately eyeing the trophy.”

In summary, Messi’s participation could prove either a boon or a challenge for Argentina, depending on how the team manages the balance around their star. Meanwhile, Germany, still a European powerhouse, approaches 2026 with cautious optimism, mindful of past setbacks and focused on steady progress through the tournament’s early stages.
