In southern Lebanon, three Indonesian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) have been killed in two separate incidents amid a sharp escalation in hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. The deaths mark the first fatal attacks on UN peacekeeping personnel since renewed large-scale conflict erupted between Israel and the Hezbollah movement on 2 March.
According to UNIFIL, the first incident occurred late on Sunday night near the village of Adchit al-Qusayr, where an artillery shell struck close to a peacekeeping position, killing one Indonesian serviceman. In a second and separate attack on Monday (30 March), an explosion targeted a UNIFIL vehicle near Bani Hayyan in southern Lebanon. Two peacekeepers were killed in the blast, while two others sustained serious injuries.
A UNIFIL spokesperson, Candice Ardiel, confirmed that both incidents are being treated with utmost seriousness and that formal investigations have been launched to establish the circumstances and responsibility. The mission stressed that peacekeepers operate under a UN mandate designed to stabilise the region, yet the current security environment has become increasingly volatile.
| Date | Location | Type of Incident | Fatalities | Injuries | Personnel Nationality |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 29–30 March (night) | Adchit al-Qusayr | Artillery shell near UN position | 1 | 0 | Indonesian |
| 30 March | Bani Hayyan | Explosion targeting UN vehicle | 2 | 2 | Indonesian |
The Government of Indonesia has strongly condemned the attacks. In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Jakarta described the targeting of peacekeepers as “completely unacceptable” and a clear violation of international norms and humanitarian principles. Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono held discussions with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and called for a swift, transparent, and independent investigation. He also urged an emergency session of the UN Security Council in light of the deteriorating situation.
Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attacks in the strongest terms, warning that any deliberate targeting of UN peacekeepers may constitute a serious breach of international humanitarian law and could amount to a war crime. UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix similarly emphasised that peacekeepers must never be considered legitimate military targets under any circumstances.
The Israeli military stated in a brief announcement that it was aware of the incidents and was reviewing whether the fatalities resulted from Hezbollah activity or from Israeli operational actions. No definitive attribution has yet been confirmed.
The wider context in southern Lebanon remains highly unstable, with escalating exchanges of fire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah along the border region. Intensified Israeli air and ground operations south of the Litani River have further restricted civilian movement and complicated evacuation routes for both residents and international personnel.
Security analysts warn that the targeting—or perceived targeting—of UN peacekeepers could significantly intensify diplomatic tensions and reshape international engagement in the conflict. They also note that such incidents risk undermining the neutrality and operational effectiveness of UN peacekeeping missions in the region.
Despite the heightened danger, UNIFIL has confirmed that its operations will continue, though all personnel have been instructed to maintain maximum vigilance as the security situation evolves.
