70-Year-Old Woman Murdered in Bandarban: Investigation Underway

A shocking and brutal murder has unsettled the community of Bandarban’s Alikadam Upazila, as the body of 70-year-old Rahima Begum was discovered late on Saturday night. Police found her lifeless with her throat slit at her residence in the Old Shibatali area of 2 No. Chaikhyang Union at around 11:00 pm on 14 February. Rahima was the wife of local resident Abu Tal.

Sources from the police and the local community revealed that Rahima had been bedridden for an extended period due to paralysis. Her son, Nurul Amin, expressed his grief and outrage, saying, “My mother was 70 years old and had suffered from paralysis for many years. Such a merciless killing at her age is completely unacceptable. I demand a fair and thorough investigation into this crime.”

A former Union Parishad member, Oliur Rahman, who first visited the scene upon receiving news of the incident, confirmed the severity of the crime and immediately alerted local authorities. Police later recovered the body and launched an investigation.

Alikadam Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Alamgir Hossain Shah, stated that preliminary inquiries suggest the murder may have been motivated by family disputes. Investigations indicate that Rahima’s middle son’s first wife, along with two daughters-in-law, may have been involved. Four suspects have been taken into custody for questioning. The body has been sent for autopsy, and a formal case has been filed.

Residents have described the killing as particularly gruesome and have expressed deep sorrow over the loss of an elderly member of the community. Family members and neighbours are calling for swift justice and punishment for the perpetrators.
