A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck northwestern Venezuela late on Wednesday, following an earlier, slightly smaller tremor in the same region, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake was felt as far away as Caracas, over 600 kilometres from the epicentre. Buildings shook, prompting residents to evacuate their apartments. AFP journalists reported widespread alarm, although Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello reassured the public on state television that the earthquake had caused “no significant structural damage.”
Despite strong tremors, no immediate reports of major destruction have emerged. Venezuelans, accustomed to limited seismic activity, were particularly unsettled. Many took to the streets in Caracas and Maracaibo as a precaution.
