Ukraine announced on Sunday that a Russian attack on Zaporizhzhia had killed one person, while Poland mobilised jets to secure its airspace amid rising tensions.
Ivan Fedorov, head of the southeastern Ukrainian region, reported on Telegram that a Russian “combined strike” had killed a woman and wounded nine others.
“A 16-year-old girl is among those receiving the necessary assistance from medical personnel,” Fedorov said.
He also shared photos, seemingly from the site of the attack, depicting a partly destroyed multi-storey building and a burnt-out car.
A nationwide air alert was active across Ukraine as of 4:09 am (0109 GMT).
Poland’s armed forces announced on X that they had mobilised aircraft and placed ground defences on high alert to protect the country’s airspace, particularly in regions bordering Ukraine.
Impact on Western Ukrainian Cities
Russia has intensified strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as temperatures fall.
Earlier this week, Moscow launched its largest-ever strike on Ukraine’s gas infrastructure, while Saturday strikes cut power to around 50,000 households in the northern Chernigiv region.
