Indonesia Lifts TikTok Licence Suspension After Data Submission

Indonesia has lifted the suspension of TikTok’s local operating licence after the social media platform shared data requested by the government regarding recent protests, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs confirmed.

TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, has over 100 million users in Indonesia, making it the country’s second-largest audience on the platform.

On Friday, the ministry had temporarily suspended TikTok’s operating licence for failing to provide adequate information on its live feature during anti-government protests in August.

However, TikTok supplied the requested data on the same day, according to the ministry’s Director General, Alexander Sabar, who stated late on Saturday:

“Based on the fulfilment of those obligations, the Communication and Digital Affairs Ministry has reactivated TikTok’s status as a registered electronic system operator.”

A spokesperson for TikTok declined to comment, although the company has previously stated that it respects the laws of the countries in which it operates.

The platform has faced multiple regulatory hurdles in Indonesia over the past years:

• August 2025: TikTok temporarily suspended its live feature amid violent protests triggered by the death of a man struck by a police vehicle.
• Monday, October 2025: Indonesia’s antitrust agency fined TikTok $900,000 for failing to notify regulators in a timely manner about its acquisition of e-commerce platform Tokopedia.
• 2023: TikTok’s e-commerce feature was suspended after it moved to assist small businesses.

The company later purchased a 75 percent stake in Tokopedia, Indonesia’s largest e-commerce platform, integrating their shopping operations.
