China’s Premier to Visit North Korea This Week

China announced on Tuesday that Premier Li Qiang will make an official visit to North Korea later this week, marking a high-level diplomatic engagement with the isolated nuclear state.

Visit Details

Official Destination Dates Purpose
Premier Li Qiang Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) 9–11 October 2025 Attend 80th anniversary celebrations of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party; official goodwill visit

A foreign ministry spokesperson confirmed: “Premier Li Qiang will lead a party and government delegation to the DPRK… and pay an official goodwill visit from October 9 to 11.”

Li’s visit will coincide with the 80th anniversary of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party, which he is expected to attend.

Context of China–North Korea Relations

While China and North Korea have experienced periods of tension over Pyongyang’s nuclear programme, the two countries have maintained close ties in recent years.

  • Last month, China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, met his North Korean counterpart in Beijing to call for a strengthening of bilateral partnership.
  • Only weeks earlier, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un paid a rare visit to Beijing, standing alongside Chinese President Xi Jinping at a parade commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.

Significance

The visit underscores China’s ongoing role as a key ally of North Korea, balancing international concerns over the DPRK’s nuclear ambitions with diplomatic and economic ties.

The trip also highlights the importance of symbolic events, such as the Workers’ Party anniversary, in consolidating the longstanding political relationship between Beijing and Pyongyang.

This visit is expected to include bilateral meetings, ceremonial events, and discussions on strategic cooperation, further cementing the partnership between the two neighbouring states
