China’s Premier to Visit North Korea This Week

China announced on Tuesday that Premier Li Qiang will make an official visit to North Korea later this week, marking a high-level diplomatic engagement with the isolated nuclear state.

A foreign ministry spokesperson confirmed: “Premier Li Qiang will lead a party and government delegation to the DPRK… and pay an official goodwill visit from October 9 to 11.”

Li’s visit will coincide with the 80th anniversary of North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party, which he is expected to attend.

While China and North Korea have experienced periods of tension over Pyongyang’s nuclear programme, the two countries have maintained close ties in recent years.
