Lionel Messi Set to Return to Argentina Line-Up

Following the World Cup qualifiers, Argentina is scheduled to play two friendly matches in the October international window. In the recently held match against Venezuela, coach Lionel Scaloni opted not to field his star player Lionel Messi, although he had hinted at this decision prior to the game. Argentina secured a 1–0 victory thanks to a lone goal from Giovanni Lo Celso.

Tomorrow (Wednesday), Argentina faces Puerto Rico, a match in which Messi is expected to return to the starting eleven.

Messi, currently playing for Inter Miami, required rest after consecutive matches. The Major League Soccer (MLS) club is also in the midst of crucial fixtures, making it important to manage his workload carefully.

  • Messi did not play for Argentina against Venezuela, which allowed him to remain in the same city (Miami) and be available for his club the following day.
  • He featured for Inter Miami within 24 hours of the Argentina match, scoring two goals and leading the team to victory.

15 Oct 2025 Argentina Puerto Rico Friendly TBD Likely to play

Argentina will face Puerto Rico at Inter Miami’s DRV PNK Stadium at 06:00 BST tomorrow morning. Messi has been observed in training, and Scaloni has subtly indicated his inclusion in the match.

“I saw Messi play for Miami on Saturday. He finished the match well. Although we haven’t spoken yet, we will discuss it before the upcoming match during our final training session. If he is fit and ready, he will play,” said coach Scaloni.

After completing the MLS fixture, Messi rejoined the Argentina squad on Sunday. The national team issued a statement: “Messi’s return has not only generated tremendous anticipation but has also changed the team’s atmosphere. The upcoming match against Puerto Rico will help the technical staff assess the squad as we prepare for future challenges.”

Argentina defeated Venezuela 1–0 without Messi, though players like Lautaro Martínez and Nico Pazra missed several opportunities to extend the lead. The opposition goalkeeper also made a number of outstanding saves, maintaining the slim scoreline.

  • With Messi returning against Puerto Rico, changes to the starting eleven are expected.
  • The technical staff will also use this match to evaluate squad dynamics and tactical options.

This sets the stage for Messi’s return to the national side, potentially strengthening Argentina ahead of further international fixtures.
