Morocco Stops Argentina’s Winning Streak to Claim Historic Title

In recent years, Morocco has steadily announced its presence on the global football stage. The nation made history in the last Qatar World Cup by reaching the semifinals. This time, Morocco went one step further, defeating Latin powerhouse Argentina to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup for the first time in its history.

On Monday morning, at the Estadio Nacional Julio in Santiago, Chile, Morocco secured a 2–0 victory over Argentina in the final.

The hero of the mega final was Yassir Jabiri, whose brace shattered the championship dreams of six-time winners Argentina. This was the first time since 2007 that Lionel Messi’s successors reached the U-20 World Cup final.

Having won six consecutive matches to reach the final, Argentina were considered favourites for the trophy. However, despite controlling 76% of the ball and attempting 20 shots throughout the match, the Argentine side failed to breach Morocco’s defence. On the contrary, every time Argentina had possession, the Moroccan team applied intense pressure, frustrating their opponents at every turn.

Morocco took the lead just 12 minutes into the game through winger Yassir Jabiri. He doubled the advantage in the 29th minute, giving the African side a comfortable 2–0 lead by halftime. Argentina tried desperately to claw their way back in the second half, creating multiple attacking opportunities while dominating possession, but were unable to break through Morocco’s solid defensive line.

With key contributions from Yassir Jabiri, Othman Mamma, and Jesim Yassin, Morocco lifted its first-ever U-20 World Cup trophy. Following Ghana in 2009, Morocco became the second African nation to achieve this historic feat.
