The Central American nation of Belize announced on Monday that it has reached an agreement with the United States to temporarily host migrants who are seeking asylum in the US.
According to an official statement released on the Belize Government’s Facebook page, the arrangement would allow asylum seekers to be transferred to Belize — designated as a “safe third country” — while their applications for asylum in the United States are under review.
The government described the accord as a humanitarian step intended to provide a secure and stable environment for migrants awaiting the outcome of their asylum processes, while also strengthening regional cooperation on migration management.
