In Nalitabari, Sherpur, natural gas was discovered while laying pipes. Locals are reportedly using this gas for cooking.
The incident occurred in Gachhagra village of Rupnarayankura Union. The homeowners and local representatives have complained that gas has been escaping for about 10–12 days, yet no action has been taken by the authorities. Despite sending reports and video footage to the Upazila Executive Officer, no steps have been taken.
Local farmer Nur Mohammad had started a submersible boring a few days ago to access drinking water. After reaching a depth of 40 feet, pressure from beneath the ground was felt. The pipe repeatedly rose, and water overflowed. The workers failed to complete the boring and tried two more times at different spots, but the same issue occurred. Bubbles and spurts revealed the pressure of natural gas. Finally, a fourth boring was completed to the east of the house.
Nur Mohammad said that bubbles and air are emerging from the boring hole, and they are using the gas to cook rice. He added that because gas was discovered while boring for drinking water, the boring had to be relocated for the fourth time. This naturally occurring gas pressure has created a stir in the area.
Sohel Rana, president of the Rupnarayankura Union Jubo Dal, said that gas reserves have been found in West Gachhagra village, but no government initiative has been taken yet. UP member Hazrat Ali added that gas is coming out from the submersible boring and that gas had been discovered in the area during previous boring attempts as well. He urged authorities to monitor the gas reserves.
Public Health Engineer Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman stated that Petrobangla assesses the natural gas reserves. However, igniting underground gas in open areas is highly risky, and maintaining a safe distance can reduce the chances of accidents.
