Eight shops were destroyed in a fire at Kochakata Market in Kurigram. Business owners claim that the damage amounts to nearly half a crore taka.
The fire broke out early Friday morning (October 31).
Upon receiving the news, a unit of Nageshwari Fire Service managed to control the fire after nearly an hour of effort.
Mominul Islam, younger brother of the affected businessman Aminur Rahman, said that their business suffered an estimated loss of 1 million taka.
Pran Chandra Saha, son of Adhir Chandra Saha, said that his father closed the shop and went home at night. In the morning, hearing commotion, they came to the market and saw their shop on fire. The fire destroyed goods worth 1.7 million taka.
Business owners reported that the following losses occurred in the fire: Adhir Chandra Saha, dealing in fertilizers, oil, seeds, and pesticides, lost goods worth 1.7 million taka; Aminul Islam lost 1 million; Hassen Ali, owner of Kakoli Traders, lost 1 million; grocery shop owner Mominul Islam, betel nut traders Ataur and Ibrahim lost 300,000; salon owner Foni Chandra Shil lost over 100,000; and spice trader Mozaffar Ali lost 50,000 taka.
AKM Wazidul Kabir Rashed, chairman of Kedar Union Parishad, said that upon hearing about the fire, he informed the Nageshwari Fire Service. Their unit came and brought the fire under control. Local residents also tried to extinguish the fire beforehand.
