November 3: Jail Killing Day

Today marks a tragic chapter in the history of Bangladesh — a night of infamy and sorrow. On November 3, 1975, barely three years after independence, one of the most brutal assassinations in the nation’s history took place within the dark cells of Dhaka Central Jail.

On that fateful night, four great national leaders of the Liberation War-time government were mercilessly killed:

Syed Nazrul Islam, the first Acting President of Bangladesh

Tajuddin Ahmad, the first Prime Minister

Captain M. Mansur Ali, Member of the Cabinet

A. H. M. Qamaruzzaman

These four noble sons of the nation were the closest companions of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman — the guiding figures of the Liberation War and the architects of Bangladesh’s independence.

The blood-soaked darkness of that night still haunts the conscience of our nation, reminding us that the enemies of freedom have never truly disappeared.

Every year on November 3, we commemorate their unwavering patriotism, sacrifice, and indomitable spirit.
