New York’s mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani, said on Tuesday that his decisive victory demonstrates a path to defeating US President Donald Trump, who has been a vocal critic of the young Muslim’s Democratic socialist policies.
“If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him,” Mamdani told supporters during a victory speech.
“In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light,” he added, signalling his intent to use the city as a model for progressive change on a national scale.
