Following his landmark victory, Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra extended her warm congratulations to the newly elected mayor. Currently residing in the United States, Chopra shared a message on social media that has attracted considerable attention.

At just 34 years old, Mamdani was recently elected as New York City’s 112th mayor, a historic achievement that has drawn international recognition.

Chopra shared a screenshot of a message addressed to Mamdani’s supporters on her Instagram Story. In the message, she wrote: “Congratulations Zohran Mamdani. 112th Mayor of New York City! History has been made. Mira Nair, congratulations to you as well.”

Zohran Mamdani is the son of internationally acclaimed filmmaker Mira Nair and Ugandan-Indian academic Mahmud Mamdani.

Born in Kampala, Uganda, Mamdani’s family later relocated to Cape Town, South Africa, before settling permanently in New York. He is an alumnus of The Bronx High School of Science and Bowdoin College. Prior to his mayoral election, Mamdani served as a New York State Assemblyman.

His election marks a significant milestone in American politics, reflecting the growing influence of South Asian Americans and young leaders in shaping the future of major urban centres.
