Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) police have filed a charge sheet against seven drug dealers in the murder case of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Samya. Investigation reveals that Samya, a Chhatra Dal leader, was deliberately killed for obstructing marijuana sales in Suhrawardy Udyan.
The charge sheet states that the accused had been selling marijuana in the park for a long time. The gang was led by drug dealer Mehedi Hasan. His associates Md. Rabbi alias Kabutor Rabbi, Md. Ripon alias Akash, Nahid Hasan Papel, Md. Hriday Islam, Md. Harun or Rashid Sohag alias Lombo Sohag, and Md. Robin managed the main drug network in the park.
DB Police Inspector Akhtar Morshed mentioned in the charge sheet that Samya and his friends frequently spent time in the park and raised awareness to stop drug sales. This created enmity with the drug dealers. On the night of May 13, in retaliation, Samya was stabbed to death.
Shahriar Alam Samya was a student of the International Relations Department, 2018-19 session, and the literature and publication secretary of F Rahman Hall Chhatra Dal. On the night of the incident, he went to Suhrawardy Udyan on a motorcycle with friends. Near Muktomanch, he saw Kabutor Rabbi with an electric taser gun and asked him to stop. A scuffle ensued. At Rabbi’s scream, Mehedi, Ripon, Papel, Sohag, Hriday, and Robin arrived and attacked Samya and his friends.
During the attack, Rabbi used a switchgear (knife) to stab Samya in the thigh. Samya fell to the ground, bleeding, and his classmates took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Investigation revealed that Mehedi Hasan had armed his associates with switchgears and electric taser guns before the incident. These weapons were used in the murder.
After the murder, Samya’s elder brother Shariful Islam filed a murder case at Shahbagh Police Station. Following the investigation, DB police submitted a charge sheet to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Thursday, naming seven accused.
The accused in the charge sheet are Mehedi Hasan, Md. Rabbi alias Kabutor Rabbi, Md. Ripon alias Akash, Nahid Hasan Papel, Md. Hriday Islam, Md. Harun or Rashid Sohag alias Lombo Sohag, and Md. Robin.
Meanwhile, Sujon Sarkar, Tamim Hawlader, Samrat Mallik, and Palash Sardar were granted exemption as the allegations against them could not be proven. Investigation shows they were present at the scene but were not directly involved in the murder and were injured while trying to protect Samya.
The charge sheet further states that Mehedi Hasan was the gang leader of marijuana sales. Ripon and Kabutor Rabbi collected marijuana from him and sold it in the park, depositing the money to Mehedi daily. A few days prior, a dispute arose when they failed to deposit the full amount, leading Mehedi to arm his associates and instruct them to stay prepared.
Investigator Akhtar Morshed said that talented Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Samya was deliberately murdered. The obstruction of drug sales was the main motive. The seven accused are preliminarily proven guilty under five sections of the Penal Code.
