BFF Seeks Explanation from BCB Over Asif’s Comments on Football

The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) has written a letter to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) seeking clarification over offensive remarks made by BCB director Asif Akbar regarding football and footballers.

In a letter signed by BFF President Tabith Awal, addressed to BCB President Aminul Islam, it was stated: “As you are undoubtedly aware, I, along with my elected executive committee, represent the guardians of football in Bangladesh, thousands of players, and millions of passionate fans. Therefore, I expect an official and public explanation from you regarding this incident.”

Last Sunday, during the opening day of a BCB conference, Asif Akbar referred to cricket as an “elite game” and also made disparaging remarks about the country’s footballers. He claimed, “Because of footballers, cricket is not being played across the country. They break wickets and have taken over every district stadium. Even in areas where there are no football events, they are using the stadiums.”

The BFF has condemned these remarks, deeming them disrespectful. In the letter, they wrote: “Such distasteful and offensive statements are extremely disrespectful to football and football players. These comments are contrary to the basic values and spirit of sport. Football is not just a game; it is a symbol of the emotions, unity, and pride of millions. Football players have played a leading role in the country’s major events, including the War of Liberation, the establishment of women’s rights, and in disaster response.”

The letter further stated: “The remarks made at the Bangladesh Cricket Conference regarding football were deeply insulting, alarming, and disappointing not only for football but for the entire sporting community. We strongly condemn these comments.”

The BFF has expressed concern over the negative attitude expressed during the cricket conference, calling it regrettable and worrying, and feels it reflects disrespect towards the country’s football fraternity.
