Jamaat Objects to Holding Election and Referendum on the Same Day

Mia Golam Parwar, Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has stated that the announcement regarding holding both the general election and referendum on the same day has disregarded the public’s opinion.

Speaking at a press conference at the party office in Maghbazar on Thursday afternoon (November 13), in response to the address of the Chief Adviser, Golam Parwar said, “We repeatedly requested that the election and the referendum not be held on the same day and provided logical reasons for our request, but these were ignored.”

He further stated, “In every national election, problems arise in certain polling stations, and voting is often suspended at many centers. What will happen to the referendum on the same day if the voting at a symbol station is halted?”

He expressed concerns that such a decision would disturb the 12.5 crore voters, adding, “For this reason, we, as eight political parties, had requested that the referendum be held before the national election. However, the Chief Adviser’s speech did not resolve this issue.”

Golam Parwar also mentioned that later in the evening, the party’s executive council would meet to review the decisions made by the Chief Adviser. Additionally, the other parties in the eight-party alliance will also review these matters and make their decisions accordingly. After that, a comprehensive response will be given.
