United States Aware of Israel’s Plans to Use Palestinians as Human Shields in Gaza

Israel allegedly used ordinary Palestinians as human shields in Gaza, based on the assumption that Hamas’ tunnel networks contained large quantities of explosives. Reports indicate that Israeli forces would send civilians into these tunnels to confirm the presence of explosives before proceeding. According to Reuters, the United States had prior knowledge of these plans.

Two former US officials told Reuters that the information was shared at the White House during the final weeks of the Biden administration in late 2024 and was subsequently analysed by American intelligence agencies.

Under international law, using civilians as human shields in conflict zones is strictly prohibited. However, Israel has faced similar accusations in Gaza and the occupied West Bank in the past. This instance is significant because it is the first time that US intelligence has reportedly indicated such evidence.

It remains unclear whether the civilians referenced in the intelligence were detainees or ordinary non-combatants, and the White House has not confirmed whether the information led to any discussions with Israel.

Following the report, the Israeli military stated that it strictly prohibits using civilians as human shields or forcing them to participate in military operations. The military police’s Criminal Investigation Division is reportedly investigating any suspicious incidents involving Palestinians allegedly coerced into military action.

Experts suggest that the release of this intelligence could increase international scrutiny and pressure on Israel, potentially escalating debates about accountability and human rights in ongoing Middle East conflicts.
