Shubman Gill Hospitalised with Neck Spasm, Ruled Out of the Kolkata Test

India have suffered a significant setback in the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata, as opener Shubman Gill has been ruled out of any further participation. The right-hander was taken to hospital on Saturday evening after experiencing a severe neck spasm, the BCCI confirmed in an official update.

A little over an hour into the morning session on Day 2, Gill arrived at the crease following the dismissal of Washington Sundar by Simon Harmer. The South African off-spinner continued his round-the-wicket attack against the Indian captain. Gill attempted to break the pressure by slog-sweeping the third ball he faced, collecting a boundary in the process. However, the shot seemed to aggravate a sudden spasm, and he was immediately seen clutching the back of his neck.

The Indian team physiotherapist rushed out, and after a brief assessment it became clear that Gill’s head movement was severely restricted. He was forced to retire hurt, walking off in visible discomfort. India’s innings folded rather quickly thereafter, losing seven wickets in the next 28 overs to finish on 189/9. Gill, unable to return to the crease, was subsequently ruled out of fielding duties on the crucial third day.

According to the BCCI, Gill remains under medical supervision in hospital. Doctors are continuing to monitor his condition, and further updates are expected once the severity of the spasm is fully assessed. With the second Test scheduled to begin in six days’ time in Guwahati, his availability remains uncertain.

Gill’s absence poses a considerable challenge for India, particularly as they will be a batter short in the fourth innings. Analysts have noted that losing one of their most dependable top-order players could disturb India’s balance as the match progresses.

India will now hope for positive news over the coming days, as Gill’s fitness could play an important role in the rest of the series.
