In 2023, during her school holidays, 15-year-old Maisun travelled with her parents and younger brother to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. After a shopping trip at a mall, they were heading to their car in the parking area when an expatriate worker, recognising Maysoon, rushed over to greet her. The worker, originally from Anwara in Chattogram, was a fan of Maysoon’s videos, as were his children. Overcome with excitement at meeting her in person, he insisted on taking a selfie and even requested to treat her and her family.
Despite Maisun ’s polite refusal, the worker, unwilling to take no for an answer, handed her 10 dirhams from his pocket. He explained that he would be deeply upset if she did not accept it. Maisun , touched by the gesture, took the money, which she still keeps as a memento of the encounter.
Maisun , from Chattogram, is a student at Bangladesh Mahila Samiti High School, where she studies in the eighth grade. Her home is in Syedpara, Rangunia. Despite her young age, Maysoon has gained a massive following worldwide. She is best known for her educational videos on learning English, which have earned her the nickname ‘Maysoon’s World’. Fans from all over—both children and adults—flock to meet her for selfies.
Her videos are not only popular for teaching English but also for the charming antics of her younger brother, Jubran, whose own Facebook page, “Jubran’s World”, has amassed over 300,000 followers.
In a country where many children feel intimidated by the English language, Maisun has managed to break down these barriers. Her engaging videos, combined with her easy-going approach to teaching, have made English seem as simple as “dal-bhat” (lentils and rice) to her followers.
