Miscreants set fire to a Grameen Bank branch by throwing petrol in the Garidaha area of Sherpur upazila in Bogura. The incident occurred late on Saturday (15 November) night.
However, no structural or internal damage was caused to the bank. Only the nameplate at the main entrance was partially damaged, confirmed the bank’s manager, Md Robiul Islam.
He stated that at around 2am on Saturday night, miscreants poured petrol from outside and ignited the fire. The on-duty night guard sensed the incident and informed them immediately. With the help of locals, the fire was brought under control. He further said that legal action will be taken regarding the incident.
Sherpur Fire Service official Bakhtiar Uddin said that upon arriving at the scene, they found that the bank had been set on fire. Bank officials and locals informed the fire service that petrol had been poured from outside before igniting the blaze. He added that the matter is under investigation.
Sherpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) SM Moinuddin said that the police visited the spot after receiving the report. No one witnessed who set the fire. The incident is under investigation and the process of filing a case is underway.
