Today is the birthday of celebrated singer Runa Laila. This year’s birthday will be celebrated, as usual, within a family arrangement, according to the distinguished artiste. In recent years, young artistes have made various special plans around her birthday. However, considering the current situation of the country and several related issues, she has decided not to have any grand celebration this time.
According to Runa Laila, from the very moment her birthday begins to the entire day and even the following day, the greetings and love she receives touch her deeply. Regarding her birthday, she said that at this stage of life the celebration is usually confined to family members, and this year will be no different. Yet childhood birthdays remain the most memorable. She especially remembers how her mother would make new dresses and cook delicious dishes.
In her 60-year musical career, Runa Laila has sung in 18 languages including Bangla, Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Urdu, Sindhi and English. One of her popular songs is ‘Dama Dam Mast Qalandar’. She has recently sung a new rendition of the song for the Coke Studio Bangla platform. The song ‘Dama Dam Mast Qalandar’ was released yesterday on the YouTube channel of Coke Studio Bangla.
Speaking about her 60 years in music, she said that more than sixty years have passed while walking the path of music. Throughout this journey, the immense support of her parents and her elder sister Deena Laila, along with the entire family, made it possible for her to come this far. She feels that every song among the thousands she has sung seemed difficult, and the recording sessions were always challenging, regardless of the language.
She stated that each song taught her something new and helped her grow further. Even now, she enjoys taking on such challenges. In her words, it is the love of countless people that has brought her to where she stands today.
