Two Farmers Die in Boat Capsize in Kushtia

Two farmers have died in a boat capsizing incident in the Padma River at Islampur, Mokarmapur Union, in Kushtia.

The incident occurred at 6:30 AM on Tuesday (18 November). The deceased farmers were identified as Abdur Rashid (58) and Mamun Hossain (27). They were crossing a branch of the Padma River in a boat to work in a sugarcane field.

Locals reported that, as usual, Rashid, Mamun, Shariful, and Yusuf went to the Padma River’s Islampur char to work in the sugarcane fields. They were crossing the river in Mamun’s small dinghy. In the middle of the river, the boat suddenly capsized. Shariful Islam and Yusuf Ali managed to swim to safety, but the remaining two farmers, Abdur Rashid and Mamun Hossain, drowned.

The bodies were later recovered by locals. Police from Vheramara and Lakshikunda river police arrived at the scene.

Vheramara Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Rab Talukdar said, “At around 6:30 AM on Tuesday, four farmers were crossing the branch of the Padma River to work in the sugarcane fields. When the boat capsized, Shariful Islam and Yusuf Ali swam to the shore. Unfortunately, Abdur Rashid and Mamun Hossain, who could not swim, drowned.”

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lakshikunda River Police, Khondakar Shafiqul Islam, said, “Two farmers died during the crossing in the dinghy. Their bodies were later recovered by locals. Legal proceedings will follow, and arrangements will be made for their burial.”
