Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali has said that after the uprising, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police was in a very fragile state. Through significant effort, hardship and public cooperation, police officers have regained their morale. He urged everyone not to attempt to break that morale.
He made these remarks while speaking to journalists on Thursday (20 November) after inaugurating the Cyber Support Centre of the DMP’s Detective Branch.
Addressing the media, the DMP Commissioner said that one of his officers was injured last night after being hit by a crude bomb. He requested that this incident be reported. The innocent officer was standing on the road in front of the police station when he was attacked. Such incidents undermine the morale of the force, which may ultimately harm everyone. Calling for an end to such unlawful acts, he warned that if this continues, citizens may be forced to guard their own homes.
He further said that on 16 November, in a wireless message, instructions were issued to open fire if anyone attempted to throw crude bombs or set vehicles on fire. The Police Act allows the use of firearms in situations involving acts of sabotage. Strict enforcement of the law has been directed if crude bombs are used for such activities.
The Commissioner added that the behaviour shown towards police officers while they were trying to prevent unrest was deeply regrettable. He requested that such conduct towards officers be avoided.
