227 Students and Teachers Abducted from School in Nigeria

Armed men have abducted 227 students and teachers from a Catholic school in central Nigeria. Local authorities confirmed the information on Friday (21 November). This marks the second major abduction in the country within a week.

A spokesperson for the Christian Association of Nigeria stated that among those abducted from St Mary’s School in Niger State, 215 are female students. The attackers also took away 12 teachers.

As insecurity continues to rise in Africa’s most populous nation, authorities in the neighbouring states of Katsina and Plateau have ordered all schools to close as a precaution. The Niger State government has also announced the closure of many schools.

Following the incident, President Bola Tinubu cancelled his international trips, which included attending the G-20 summit scheduled to be held in Johannesburg.

Earlier, on Monday, armed men abducted 25 female students after attacking a secondary school in Kebbi State in the northwest.

Additionally, a separate attack on a church in the western region resulted in the deaths of two people.
