A businessman named Anwar Hossain (50) has been hacked to death inside his shop in Ramganj, Lakshmipur. Local youth Yusuf has been accused of committing the murder, although the exact reason behind the killing is still unknown.
The incident took place on Tuesday (25 November) morning at Nagmud Bazaar in Bholakot Union of the upazila.
Anwar, the victim, was a resident of Saharpara village in Bholakot Union and ran a confectionery business at Nagmud Bazaar.
The accused, Yusuf, is the son of Ershad Mia of Maizer Bari in the same village. He had previously lived abroad and, after returning around one and a half years ago, never went back.
According to police and local sources, Anwar was sitting in his shop as usual in the morning when Yusuf arrived and got into an argument with him. At one stage, Yusuf called him towards the inner part of the shop and attacked him with a sharp weapon, stabbing him in the chest and abdomen. Yusuf then fled the scene. Locals rescued the severely injured Anwar but he died on the way to the Upazila Health Complex. Upon arrival at the hospital, doctors declared him dead. No one could state the exact motive behind the incident.
In a tearful voice, Anwar’s wife, Jannat Akter Sathi, said she had no idea why her husband was killed. She demanded justice for the brutal murder.
Ramganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Bari said that police have been sent to the hospital and the crime scene. The murder resulted from a personal dispute. Accused Yusuf has fled, and efforts are underway to arrest him.
