Shaheed Dr. Milon Day: A Defining Chapter in Bangladesh’s Democratic Struggle

Today, 27 November, marks a poignant yet proud moment in Bangladesh’s long and determined march towards democracy—a day dedicated to remembering Shaheed Dr Shamsul Alam Khan Milon.

November 1990 was ablaze with protest. The entire nation rose in defiance of autocracy, united by one demand: the restoration of democracy. In that charged atmosphere, hired gunmen loyal to the Ershad regime shot dead an unflinching physician, teacher, and activist—Dr Milon—on the grounds of Dhaka Medical College.

Dr Milon was far more than a doctor. He was then the Joint Secretary-General of the Bangladesh Medical Association and a committed leader of JASAD. His ideals centred on building a truly democratic nation and safeguarding people’s rights. Personal safety never featured in his calculations; he thought only of his country, its people, and the generations to come.

His assassination sent shockwaves across the nation. It was as though his blood breathed new life into the movement. Grief, anger, and resolve fused into a single, unstoppable force. His sacrifice became the final blow to dictatorship. Within days, the autocratic regime collapsed—clearing the path for democracy to re-emerge into the light.

On the 31st anniversary of his martyrdom, we remember not only a fallen hero but a beacon of courage whose life and death affirmed that the struggle for truth, justice, and human rights forms the most powerful chapters of history.
