Ashes in Two Days: ICC Gives Perth Pitch Top Rating

The ICC has given the pitch used for the first Ashes Test in Perth a ‘Very Good’ rating, the highest possible. Match referee Ranjan Madugalle praised the wicket in his official report for maintaining a fair contest between bat and ball.

The match was over in only 847 balls, making it the second fastest Test in Australia’s history. Only a Test in 1888 finished in fewer balls.

Characteristics of the Perth pitch included consistent bounce, limited seam movement, and good carry, offering a balanced challenge despite the match ending early.

Innings Fast Bowlers’ Impact Wickets / Runs

Fast bowlers dominated the first three innings. Starc took 7 wickets alone, while the England captain added 5. Jofra Archer impressed too, leaving 19 wickets fallen on day one.

On the second day, pacers continued their dominance, dismissing England for 164 in their second innings. Yet Travis Head changed the game, scoring 123 runs from 83 balls and guiding Australia to chase a target of 205 in one session.

Around 100,000 spectators attended the two-day event. Cricket Australia’s James Allsop said:
“Though some fans missed out on days three and four, the cricket in two days was phenomenal and energised the Ashes series.”

He added:
“The ‘Very Good’ rating confirms that the pitch offered a fair contest, and the thrilling performance from both sides has captivated audiences and inspired the next generation.”
