The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) conducted a special operation on Sunday at the immigration section of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport following allegations of bribery and the use of forged documents to secure immigration clearance for passengers. Officials from the ACC headquarters were present at the airport to collect records and documents related to the claims. During the operation, the Immigration Police Superintendent and other responsible officers were questioned in connection with the allegations.
According to an ACC press release, the operation was prompted by complaints that some immigration officers, acting in collusion, had accepted bribes and used falsified documents to expedite passenger clearance. The collected records and materials will now undergo meticulous verification and analysis, after which a detailed report will be submitted to the Commission for further action.
Experts have noted that airports are often the first point of contact for visitors and play a crucial role in shaping international perceptions of a country. Any malpractice or corruption at such facilities can not only undermine public confidence but also tarnish the nation’s image. By initiating this investigation, the ACC aims to identify irregularities, determine their origin, and lay the groundwork for corrective measures.
The Commission emphasised that the operation is vital for establishing the authenticity of the initial complaints and for understanding the mechanisms through which any misconduct occurred. Such initiatives are expected to enhance transparency in the immigration process and ensure passengers receive efficient and lawful service.
Officials hope that this operation will strengthen accountability among immigration staff, deter future misconduct, and send a strong signal about the government’s commitment to tackling corruption. For passengers, it represents a positive step towards safer, more transparent procedures, and it underlines the importance of rigorous oversight in maintaining public trust in state institutions.
By regularly monitoring and auditing key institutions such as airports, the ACC intends to foster a culture of integrity, thereby reinforcing both domestic and international confidence in Bangladesh’s immigration and travel systems.
