Thrilling Wins for Sonargaon, Jahangirnagar and BRAC Universities

Sonargaon University, Jahangirnagar University, and BRAC University celebrated victories in their opening matches of the 3rd Ispahani–Prothom Alo Inter-University Football Tournament. Meanwhile, Bangladesh University of Business and Technology, University of Scholars, and East West University were eliminated in the first round of the knockout-style tournament.

At the Daffodil International University ground in Birulia, Savar, two of the three matches of the day were decided in tiebreakers. The excitement of penalty shootouts was seen in both the first and the last match of the day.

In the final match, BRAC University and East West University remained goalless for 70 minutes. BRAC scored four goals in the tiebreaker to win 4–2. The team included Rwandan student Thierry Simiumukiza. BRAC’s midfielder and vice-captain Wasi Itmam Anjum was named the player of the match.

Jahangirnagar University secured victory despite the absence of key player Mahmudul Hasan Kiran. The fastest goal of the tournament was scored by Wadud Ahmed Sizan in just 17 seconds.

The match between Sonargaon and Bangladesh University of Business and Technology also went to a tiebreaker, where goalkeeper Joy Chakraborty saved consecutive shots to secure a 4–2 win for his team.

Former national football captain Zahid Hasan Emily and senior officials from Ispahani Tea Limited presented awards to the best players. Emily praised all the teams, saying, “Wins and losses are part of football. Such initiatives are vital for advancing university football.”
