A case has been filed in Dhaka against the well-known Baul singer Abul Sarkar for hurting religious sentiments and defamation. On Monday (1 December), Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Juel Rana accepted the case and instructed an investigation.
The case was filed on 30 November by Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman. It alleges that on 4 November, Abul Sarkar performed at a Pala event in Jabra, Manikganj. A video circulated on social media shows him making indecent remarks about Allah and distorting Surah Nas from the Quran.
The case has been filed under Sections 295 and 295(a) of the Penal Code 1860. Abul Sarkar is the sole accused.
