Indian Cricketers Awestruck by Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

Following India’s triumph in last year’s T20 World Cup, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirements from the shortest format of the game. Shortly thereafter, both players also declared their exit from Test cricket, a decision that left fans and supporters disappointed despite their undeniable talent. However, the duo continues to feature prominently in One Day Internationals (ODIs), where their experience and skill remain invaluable assets to the Indian side.

Yesterday, during the ODI clash against South Africa in Ranchi, Kohli and Rohit once again showcased their remarkable batting prowess. Their elegant and composed performances contributed significantly to India posting a record total of 349 runs. Rohit Sharma scored a measured 57 runs, while Virat Kohli, after 280 days, notched up yet another century, taking his career tally to 83. This innings was not just a display of skill, but a testament to the influence these two senior players exert on the team.

Ahead of the series, India’s captain Lokesh Rahul heaped praise upon Kohli and Rohit, highlighting their central role within the squad. “The importance of Rohit and Kohli cannot be overstated. Having senior players of their calibre in the dressing room boosts everyone’s confidence. Their guidance and experience support the entire team. I am genuinely delighted to have them with us,” Rahul said after winning the toss.

Following the match, at the presentation ceremony, Rahul added: “Watching Rohit and Kohli bat is always a pleasure. Their freedom at the crease is something they have demonstrated consistently throughout their careers. I have been observing them for many years, and simply seeing them in the dressing room is always enjoyable.”

Star spinner Kuldeep Yadav, in a video message posted by the BCCI, reflected on Kohli’s impact: “I began my international career under Virat’s captaincy. Seeing him bat today was like stepping back eight or nine years, to how he played in 2017–2018. He produced a magnificent innings in Ranchi. Every shot exuded confidence and precision.”

Kuldeep further noted the value of Kohli’s presence in the team: “It is reassuring to have him around. He constantly offers guidance, even during bowling spells. Senior players like him bring a distinct energy to the dressing room. We are fortunate to have him.”

Similarly, young talent Tilak Varma expressed admiration: “We witnessed one of Kohli’s finest innings. Being able to see his century up close for the first time was incredible. He has been exceptional in all aspects of the game for 17 years. I try to observe and learn from him whenever possible, and it is a privilege to watch him bat.”

This match clearly demonstrates that Kohli and Rohit remain pillars of Indian cricket—not merely through runs, but by fostering confidence, leadership, and mentorship within the team.
