Carlo Ancelotti, the coach of Brazil, has stressed that only players who are completely fit will have a chance to be included in the 2026 World Cup squad. Even household names like Neymar and Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior are not exempt from this rule. Ancelotti confirmed that if either player is only 90% fit, he would select a fully fit alternative.
In an interview on Brazil’s ‘Record’ TV show ‘Sport Record’, Ancelotti explained, “There is no shortage of talented players. I must choose those who are physically ready. This applies to Neymar as well as Vinicius. If Vinicius is not fully fit, someone else will take his place. We have strong competition for positions, particularly in the attacking line.”
Neymar has been sidelined for more than two years due to injury, with his last appearance in the national team coming in October 2023 following ACL surgery. Despite returning to club football, he has struggled to play consistently. In a recent match for Santos, Neymar played with a knee injury and even scored a crucial goal to save the club from relegation.
Ancelotti acknowledged Neymar’s extraordinary talent but noted the limitations caused by repeated injuries. “He is incredibly skilled, but his fitness has been compromised by recurring injuries. Nevertheless, he remains on the radar for selection if he can return to full fitness,” he said.
With no more fixtures this year, Brazil will resume in March with friendly matches, after which the World Cup squad will be finalised. Neymar must regain full fitness in this window to secure his place in the squad.
