Ashes Bounce-Back: England Reveal Squad Two Days Before Gabba Test

In a bid to recover from their heavy defeat in Perth, England have announced their playing XI for the second Ashes Test at Brisbane’s Gabba just 48 hours before the match. The day-night fixture will commence at 10:00 BST on Thursday.

Despite the Gabba’s reputation as a pacer-friendly pitch, England have opted to include a spinner to exploit the conditions under the pink ball. The only change to the squad sees off-spinner and all-rounder Will Jacks replacing the injured pacer Mark Wood.

This Test will mark Jacks’ first appearance at this level, as he overtakes leg-spinner Shadab Bashir in the selection pecking order. In his brief Test career, Jacks has taken six wickets and scored 89 runs, demonstrating his all-round capability.

England were comprehensively beaten in the first Test, succumbing in just two days to Mitchell Starc’s pace and Travis Head’s aggressive batting. The second Test offers a chance to redress the imbalance.

Selected XI for England:
Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jamie Smith (wicketkeeper), Will Jacks, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer.

The decision to add Jacks reflects a strategic pivot by Stokes, seeking to bolster England’s spin options under the lights at the Gabba. With limited time to prepare, the side will have to adapt quickly to the pitch and weather conditions.

England now face a critical match in the series, and the inclusion of a spin-bowling all-rounder is a calculated gamble. Their performance in Brisbane will determine whether they can halt Australia’s momentum and restore confidence in the Ashes series.
