Police have arrested Nishi Rahman (38), accused in a case filed over killing eight puppies by putting them in a sack and dumping them into a pond in Ishwardi of Pabna. The case was lodged on Tuesday night by Upazila Livestock Officer Aklima Khatun, after which police conducted a drive and detained Nishi Rahman.
Officer-in-Charge A S M Abdun Nur said the case was filed under Section 7 of the Animal Welfare Act 2019, naming Nishi Rahman, wife of Small Farmers Foundation officer Hasanur Rahman Noyon, as the sole accused. Ishwardi Circle Additional Superintendent of Police Pronab Kumar stated that she had taken shelter in a house near Rahimpur Girls’ School in the municipal area, from where she was arrested. She will be sent to court on Wednesday after legal procedures.
Aklima Khatun, the complainant, said the incident sparked widespread discussion across the media and social media. Farida Akhtar, Adviser to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, also called and requested action regarding the matter. She added that such inhumane acts damage the country’s reputation and that no one involved in animal killing will be spared.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Moniruzzaman said the accused woman’s husband, Hasanur Rahman Noyon, had been instructed on Monday to vacate the gazetted quarter, which they left on Tuesday.
Locals reported that a mother dog named Tom had been living near the UNO’s residence for a long time. A week earlier she had given birth to eight puppies. Sometime on Sunday night, the puppies were put into a sack and thrown into the pond. On Monday morning, their bodies were recovered and later buried beside the UNO’s residence.
