Bangladesh Bank is set to release a newly designed Tk500 banknote on Thursday, 4 December. The note will initially be distributed from the central bank’s Motijheel office before being gradually rolled out to other branches nationwide.
According to a press release from Bangladesh Bank, the new note prominently features iconic national architecture. The front side displays the Central Shaheed Minar, a symbol of Bangladesh’s independence and national history. The back side depicts the Bangladesh Supreme Court. The note measures 152mm × 65mm.
A stylised water lily motif forms the central background. To enhance security, a Royal Bengal Tiger watermark and an electrotype “500” have been incorporated. Despite its predominantly green colour, the bank stated that the note has a modern design and strengthened anti-counterfeiting features.
The new Tk500 note contains a total of 10 advanced security elements. Bangladesh Bank confirmed that all existing notes and metal coins, including older Tk500 notes, will remain in circulation.
The introduction of the new note is expected to make transactions more secure. Citizens will be able to obtain the new notes from banks and ATMs. The note carries the signature of the Governor of Bangladesh Bank, Dr Ahsan H Mansur, certifying its authenticity.
