Real Madrid have ended a troubling run of draws with a decisive 3-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao, largely thanks to Kylian Mbappé’s electrifying performance. The French striker scored twice, reminding everyone why he is central to the club’s attacking strategy, while Eduardo Camavinga added a composed third goal to secure the win. The victory offers a welcome boost for Madrid, who had appeared somewhat off-rhythm in recent weeks.
From the first minute, Madrid demonstrated intent, launching relentless attacks. Both Mbappé and Vinícius Jr. created early opportunities, but Bilbao’s goalkeeper Unai Simón managed to keep the scoreline level for the opening minutes. However, in the seventh minute, Mbappé opened the scoring with a sensational strike from outside the penalty area, brilliantly controlling a pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold and evading defenders.
Bilbao responded with attacking pressure, but Courtois stood firm, producing a series of critical saves. Vinícius Jr. came close to doubling the lead in the 38th minute, but it was Camavinga who finished a swift counter-attack four minutes later to make it 2-0. Madrid controlled the remainder of the first half and maintained momentum after the break.
Courtois again demonstrated his quality with a spectacular save to keep out Mikel’s long-range shot. The match’s defining moment came in the 59th minute when Mbappé fired a bullet from 25 yards, assisted by Álvaro Carreras, making it 3-0. His brace brings his season tally in La Liga to 16 goals, highlighting his vital role in Madrid’s title bid.
This win restores confidence in Real’s squad and narrows the gap with league leaders Barcelona, who remain just one point ahead. Athletic Bilbao, meanwhile, stay eighth in the table with 20 points. Madrid now turn their focus to the next fixture against Celta Vigo at Santiago Bernabéu, hoping to build on the momentum generated by Mbappé’s heroics.
