In Saltha Upazila of Faridpur, Utpal Sarkar, 26, a fish trader, was brutally stabbed to death by assailants.
On Friday afternoon, Maruf Hasan, the Inspector (Investigation) of Saltha Police Station, confirmed the incident to the Daily Star.
He stated that around 7:30 am, local residents found the body near Kalitala Bridge in Gaurdia village of Atghar Union and informed the police. The officers went to the scene and prepared a preliminary investigation report.
Utpal was the son of Ajay Kumar Sarkar of Ronkail village, Kanai Pur Union, Faridpur Sadar Upazila.
Quoting family members, Maruf said, “Utpal regularly purchased fish from Muksudpur in Gopalganj and sold them in the local market. On this day, he left home around 4:30 am to buy fish.”
Residents of Gaurdia village reported that van driver Firoz Molla had been tied up near the railings of Kalitala Bridge, with his eyes covered. “Local residents untied Firoz and took him into custody,” the police officer said.
Firoz told Maruf that three to four people were involved in the killing.
The police officer added, “Utpal suffered multiple sharp weapon wounds to his head and body. The body has been sent to Faridpur Medical College morgue for autopsy. Authorities are investigating whether the killing was motivated by past enmity or robbery.”
