Mamata Banerjee Visits Hospitalised Singer Nachiketa Chakraborty

Kolkata’s beloved and soul-stirring singer, Nachiketa Chakraborty, was admitted to a private hospital in the city following a sudden bout of chest pain, prompting concerns about his health. In a show of deep personal concern, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the hospital on Monday, 6 December, immediately after returning from an official trip to Cooch Behar, to enquire about the singer’s condition.

According to hospital sources, initial examinations revealed a blockage in Mr Chakraborty’s heart. On Saturday, 6 December, he underwent an urgent surgical procedure during which two stents were successfully placed in his coronary arteries. Doctors have confirmed that the singer’s condition is currently stable, and he remains under careful observation. Gradual improvement in his physical health has been noted by the medical team.

During her hospital visit, Chief Minister Banerjee met with the doctors to obtain a detailed update and spent time with the singer, reflecting their long-standing friendship and close personal bond. She had previously advised Mr Chakraborty on taking greater care of his health during the Durga Puja celebrations a few months ago. News of his surgery prompted her immediate visit, demonstrating her continued concern for his wellbeing.

Nachiketa Chakraborty has been a prominent figure in Bengali music for decades, charming audiences with life-affirming songs such as Neelanjana, Anirban, Doctor, and Briddhashram. With advancing age, his physical resilience has understandably declined, a matter which Chief Minister Banerjee has long monitored. His demanding concert schedule during the winter season, coupled with insufficient rest, contributed to health concerns. Routine health screenings at a diagnostic centre in Park Circus initially flagged potential issues, leading to further tests that confirmed the cardiac blockage. Prompt hospital admission and timely intervention were crucial in managing the situation.

Hospital authorities have reiterated that the singer’s condition is stable, with continuous monitoring in place. Fans and well-wishers across the state and beyond have been sending messages of support, wishing him a swift and complete recovery.
