Tragic Morning in Chandpur: Young Man Killed Buying Fish

In a tragic turn of events in Chandpur, a young man lost his life on Friday morning while heading to the local fish market after performing Fajr prayers. Mohammad Roman, aged 20, was fatally struck by a covered van while making his way to purchase fish, leaving the community in shock and mourning.

The accident occurred at around early morning at Bhatialpur Crossroads on the Chandpur-Lakshmipur regional highway in Faridganj municipality. Alongside Roman, two other young men, Bappi, aged 18, and Sohag, aged 17, were seriously injured and immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

Roman, the only son of Jasim Jamadar from Char Kumira village, had been well-known in his community for his kind-hearted nature. His sudden death has sent ripples of grief through his family, neighbours, and friends.

Eyewitnesses reported that the covered van, bearing registration number Dhaka Metro-T-13-3124, lost control before hitting Roman and his companions. Following the incident, a furious crowd seized the van and held it until the police arrived, highlighting the intense outrage and grief among local residents.

Faridganj Police confirmed that the van, its driver, and two accomplices, identified as Imran, 26, and Md. Ikram, 23, were taken into custody. Officer-in-Charge Helal Uddin stated that the vehicle had been impounded and the suspects were being investigated under road safety and criminal law.

The tragic accident underscores the persistent road safety challenges in the region, particularly on busy stretches like the Chandpur-Lakshmipur highway, where pedestrian and vehicular accidents are all too common. Local authorities have called for increased vigilance, stricter traffic monitoring, and enhanced public awareness campaigns to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Family members and neighbours have demanded justice for Roman, urging the authorities to prosecute the driver and hold all responsible parties accountable. Community leaders have expressed deep concern over the lack of proper pedestrian crossings and the reckless behaviour of commercial vehicles in the area.

As Chandpur mourns the untimely death of a promising young man, questions remain about road safety measures, enforcement, and the accountability of commercial drivers. Roman’s death has become a sobering reminder of how a routine morning trip can turn into a fatal incident within seconds.
