Protesters Stage Demonstration Outside Indian Assistant High Commission

A group of young activists staged a protest outside the Indian Assistant High Commission in Chattogram on Thursday night to condemn the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, convener of the Inkilab Manch. The demonstration took place at around 10:45 pm in the city’s Khulshi area, attracting the attention of local law enforcement.

According to eyewitnesses, the protesters, identifying themselves as members of “Chhatra-Jonota” (Students and Citizens), gathered outside the mission shortly after news of Hadi’s death spread through media channels. Police officers quickly arrived at the site to monitor the situation and maintain order.

Sharif Osman Hadi succumbed to his injuries at approximately 10:45 pm on Thursday while receiving treatment in Singapore, where he had been flown for advanced medical care following a shooting attack. The tragic incident had occurred earlier this month, on 12 December, the day after the announcement of the thirteenth national parliamentary election schedule, when Hadi was shot in the head on Box Culvert Road in Purana Paltan, Dhaka. Hadi had gained public attention in recent months for his outspoken criticism of the ruling Awami League and his stance against Indian influence in Bangladesh.

Eyewitnesses reported that around 20–25 protesters chanted slogans condemning Hadi’s murder, as well as slogans critical of the Awami League and Indian policies, while maintaining a vigil outside the mission. The demonstration was brief; police intervened to disperse the group and ensure the situation did not escalate.

One of the protesters, Mohammad Tanvir, alleged that political leaders affiliated with the Awami League had conspired from abroad to target Hadi due to his critical statements. “He was targeted because of his outspoken position against the Awami League and Indian influence,” Tanvir said.

Khulshi Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Shahin Alam, confirmed to local media that 15–20 individuals had gathered outside the Indian Assistant High Commission. He stated that the protesters were removed safely and that police continued to monitor the area, as reports suggested more individuals might arrive.

The protest underscores growing tensions in Chattogram over Hadi’s assassination and reflects the broader political unrest surrounding the national election period, as activists and supporters demand accountability for the killing of the prominent political figure.
