Protesters Breach Barricades Outside Indian Assistant High Commission

In Khulna, student activists from various organisations staged a protest outside the Indian Assistant High Commission, breaking through police barricades to voice their grievances. The demonstration took place on Thursday afternoon along Shamsur Rahman Road, drawing attention from local authorities and residents alike.

According to eyewitnesses, the protesters assembled at Royal Mor after marching from different parts of the city. As the procession approached the Indian Assistant High Commission, police had erected barricades to prevent them from reaching the premises. Despite these measures, the demonstrators managed to breach the first line of barricades and proceeded to gather in front of the mission.

The protestors claimed that India’s political stance and statements pose a direct threat to Bangladesh’s sovereignty. They carried banners, chanted slogans, and delivered speeches highlighting their concerns about the perceived interference in national matters.

Speaking to The Daily Star, Tajul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP), explained that the barricades were strategically placed in multiple stages to contain the demonstration. “For security purposes, we had set up several barricades. The protesters managed to break through the first barricade and assembled in front of the office, but they could not breach the second line,” he said.

Tajul Islam added that the protesters stayed at the site for only a short period before dispersing peacefully. He confirmed that the situation was brought under control without any major incidents.

The demonstration reflects growing tensions among local student groups regarding regional political dynamics and perceived threats to national sovereignty. Authorities emphasised that while peaceful protests are permitted, any attempt to escalate violence or damage property would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Khulna Metropolitan Police stated that they will continue to monitor sensitive areas and maintain a visible presence near diplomatic missions to prevent further disturbances.
