Death Threat Scandal Rocks Rising Political Star

A serious political storm has erupted after allegations surfaced that Abdul Hannan Masud, a senior joint chief coordinator of the National Citizens Party (NCP) and a parliamentary candidate for Noakhali-6 (Hatia), received explicit death threats via social media. The controversy has quickly escalated, drawing national attention after screenshots of threatening messages began circulating widely online late Thursday night.

The viral screenshots reportedly originated from Facebook accounts linked to Israat Raihan Ami, son of former Char Ishwar Union chairman Abdul Halim Azad, and one of his supporters, Rupak Nandi. The messages, sent through Facebook Messenger and public status updates, contained language widely perceived as violent, intimidating, and politically charged.

In one of the screenshots, Israat Raihan Ami allegedly warned that if certain leaders attempted to arrest his father, the consequences would be severe. The message claimed that political leaders, including Hannan Masud and another figure named Tanvir, would be unable to move freely in the northern region. The tone of the message suggested imminent violence, warning that party activists would “devour” opponents if provoked further.

Another threatening message, allegedly posted by Rupak Nandi on his Facebook timeline, directly addressed Hannan Masud with a chilling warning. He urged the candidate not to “play with fire”, stating that people loyal to Abdul Halim Azad would never allow him to remain unharmed. The post further implied physical harm under the guise of election-related intimidation, adding that the northern region would be declared off-limits should their leader be arrested.

Efforts to obtain statements from Abdul Halim Azad and his son proved unsuccessful, as their mobile phones were reportedly switched off. Rupak Nandi also remained unreachable, further intensifying public suspicion and criticism.

Mohammad Yusuf Reza, convener of Hatia Upazila Youth Shakti, provided additional context to the controversy. He stated that the former union chairman had recently made a provocative speech at a local tea stall, indirectly referencing Hannan Masud. According to Reza, Azad suggested that several popular candidates would “disappear” before the election. Shortly after that speech, social media threats began to surface, allegedly from Azad’s son and close followers.

Reza strongly condemned the threats and demanded immediate legal action, stressing that intimidation tactics have no place in a democratic process. He warned that such behaviour could destabilise the already tense pre-election environment.

Responding to the situation, Abdul Hannan Masud described the threats as deeply alarming and unacceptable. He confirmed that he had formally informed law enforcement authorities and expressed confidence that a proper investigation would identify those responsible. Masud emphasised that democracy cannot survive under fear and intimidation.

Hatia Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Mohammad Saiful Alam, confirmed that authorities were aware of the issue. He stated that the screenshots had been reviewed and that a General Diary was being filed. According to police, a full investigation is underway and appropriate legal measures will follow.

As political tensions continue to rise, this incident has ignited widespread debate about online threats, election violence, and the safety of candidates in Bangladesh’s evolving political landscape.
