A shocking incident in Valuka, Mymensingh, has sent ripples of alarm through the local community, as new details emerge surrounding the brutal death of 28-year-old garment worker Dipu Chandra Das. The victim was allegedly forced to resign from his job at Pioneer Knitwears BD Limited before being handed over to an enraged mob, who subsequently beat him to death.
The revelation came during a press briefing on Saturday (20 December) by RAB-14 Director, Naimul Hasan, who disclosed that ten individuals have been arrested in connection with the case. Among those detained is Alamgir Hossain (38), the factory’s floor manager, along with the factory’s quality in-charge and Miraj Hossain Akon (46).
Describing the sequence of events, Director Hasan stated: “The incident began around 4:00 pm. The floor in-charge compelled Dipu to resign. Following his resignation, he was handed over to an agitated crowd. Instead of ensuring his safety or handing him to the police, these factory officials failed in their duty, which is why we have arrested them.”
When questioned further, Hasan emphasised: “Repeated efforts to ascertain the exact instigator or motive have been inconclusive. We are investigating whether the mob acted out of prior enmity or spontaneous rage. Under no circumstance does the law permit killing someone on such grounds, hanging them from a tree, and burning them. Neither the government nor law enforcement will condone such acts.”
Although the case has been officially registered at Valuka Model Police Station and will be formally investigated by local police, RAB will continue a ‘shadow investigation’ to monitor progress.
Eight additional suspects have also been arrested: Tarek Hossain (19), Limon Sarker, Manik Mia (20), Ershad Ali (39), Nijhum Uddin (20), Azmal Hasan Sagir (26), Shahin Mia (19), and Md. Nazmul, with the last three apprehended by the district detective branch. Director Hasan clarified that none of the arrested individuals are affiliated with any political party, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects.
The tragic incident occurred late Thursday night when Dipu Chandra Das was attacked over alleged religious derogatory remarks. His body was subsequently set on fire, prompting a nearly two-hour blockade of the Dhaka–Mymensingh highway. Police later restored order and retrieved the partially burnt body, which was sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.
Following the incident, Dipu’s younger brother, Apu Chandra Das, filed a murder case on Friday afternoon against 150 unidentified individuals at Valuka Model Police Station.
