Child Goes Missing, Found Dead Near Home After Days

In a tragic turn of events in Sherpur’s Nakla upazila, the lifeless body of a seven-year-old girl was recovered from a pond near her home, four days after she went missing. The child, identified as Reshmi Akter, was the daughter of Md. Saiful Islam, a resident of Kaida Madhopara (Begunpotti) in Nakla municipality.

The grim discovery was made on Saturday morning, 20 December, when local residents spotted a body floating in a pond adjacent to Reshmi’s house. Family members immediately identified the deceased as the missing girl. The Nakla Police promptly retrieved the body and, after completing the initial on-site documentation, sent it to the district hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ripon Chandra Gop confirmed the recovery and stated that legal procedures regarding the incident are underway. “We have recovered the body of a young child and are proceeding with all necessary investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding her death,” he said.

According to police and local sources, Reshmi went missing on 16 December while playing near her home. Despite extensive searches by family members and neighbours, there was no sign of her. That evening, her father, Md. Saiful Islam, filed a general diary with Nakla Police to report his daughter’s disappearance.

The community has been left in shock, mourning the untimely death of the young girl. Local authorities have urged residents to exercise caution near water bodies and are reviewing safety measures in the area to prevent similar tragedies.

The police investigation is ongoing, and authorities are examining all possible leads. Residents have been requested to cooperate with law enforcement and report any information that might aid in clarifying the circumstances of Reshmi’s death.
