Farmer Killed Over Wife’s Debt-driven Theft

In a tragic incident in Netrokona, a farmer lost his life after attempting to prevent the theft of his cattle by his own wife and four accomplices. Helal Uddin, 58, from Nadiapara village in Netrokona Sadar, was brutally murdered when he tried to stop his wife, Bedena Akter, 40, from selling a cow to repay outstanding debts.

According to police, Bedena Akter had taken several loans amounting to around BDT 100,000 from multiple creditors. Under pressure to repay these loans, she conspired with Liton Mia of Semia Dudhkura village in Barhatta to secretly sell her husband’s cow without his knowledge.

The plan escalated into violence last Saturday night when Liton Mia, along with Riel Mia and three others, attempted to steal the cow from Helal Uddin’s cowshed. Upon discovering the theft, Helal confronted the group, only to be overpowered. He was restrained, and his throat was slit in the presence of five people, including his wife.

The following morning, Helal’s lifeless body was found by police at his home, with his hands and mouth bound. Helal Uddin was the son of the late Ashrab Ali of Nadiapara village.

A case was filed on Monday by Helal’s younger brother, Riaz Uddin, naming unidentified individuals as the perpetrators. Subsequently, police arrested Bedena Akter, Riel Mia (40), and Liton Mia (50). Further investigation and confessions led to the arrests being confirmed, and the suspects were remanded to custody via the court. Notably, Liton Mia has five prior cases of theft pending against him.

Netrokona Model Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Champak Dam stated that the investigation revealed the true motive behind the murder, and authorities are actively pursuing the remaining suspects involved. Police Chief OC Md. Al Mamun Ghosh confirmed that the swift resolution underscores the commitment to bringing perpetrators to justice.
